1959 Jaguar XK-150 S Roadster/OTS
The current owner purchased this exquisite, award winning and JCNA sanctioned champion division winning, 99.43 point car several years ago through Hyman Ltd. The car was kept in California until just a couple years ago when it was shipped back east to CT, where the owners have a second home.
The previous owner found the car in Arizona looking a bit disheveled and over the course of several years, restored the entire car.
The numbers matching engine and trans (with Laycock overdrive) were both rebuilt, the rear axle was rebuilt, all new bushings, brakes, lines, etc. were fitted after the frame and suspension components were completely stripped, blasted and powder coated. All the body panels were rust free from its time in the desert, so no metal work was needed except to strip it down and repaint. The owner then, decided to go with Imperial Maroon exterior and biscuit leather interior. Originally, based on the included Jaguar Heritage Certificate, the car was Cream over a red interior with a black hood/top. In essence, everything was touched, every nut and bolt. If it couldn't be refurbished to original quality, a new one was sourced. The car was taken to JCNA shows then and scored similar numbers.
This XK 150 is 1 of just 888 that were built with the S upgrades (3 SU carbs, stainless dual exhaust and 3.4L DOHC inline six, 250 HP, orange head high compression head) and as an Open Two Seater/Roadster. The lines are so much nicer than the drop head coupe and include roll down windows as opposed to drop in side screens and the soft top that folds away behind the seats.
4587 miles have been added to the car since the restoration over 15 years ago. This car is no longer perfect, but still very close. There are two minor dings in the paint (one, on the passenger door, happened when it was shipped from CA to CT). There are also three areas that have been touched up. In JCNA scoring, touched up paint is not counted against the car, so this car is still ranking as a 99+ point car. The paint still shines beautifully and has a great deal of depth. The chrome is all near perfect, inside and out.
The Biscuit leather interior shows very little wear, just some minor looseness on the driver seat back. The seat frames and the top frame are all painted in the correct dove grey and still show nothing but some very minor wear. The underside of the car is almost as stunning as the top side. Having been powder coated, there is a great shine even under the car. There is some slight corrosion showing on a couple of suspension bits. Even 15 years later, this car still stands near the top of the class, winning its class at a recent JCNA sanctioned concours in CT with a score of 96.8.
Pull the choke, turn the key, press the starter button and the inline six jumps to life with a deep purr from the dual exhaust. Super smooth. Shift into gear and turn the large steering wheel and you'll notice it's much easier than expected, the current owner installed electric power steering. So well hidden that even the JCSNE judges didn't initially see it. That is where it lost some points as these wonderful cats didn't come with power steering from the factory. Flick the gear lever into 1st and feel the toque pull you away from the stop sign and down the road with ease, like the lithe cat it is. Get up to speed and flip the overdrive switch and feel the engine drop its RPMs and settle into "highway mode". The car is a dream to drive.
This is a truly stunning Jaguar car. The current owner spent well over $200,000 for it just 7 years ago. He knows that values have dropped and has accepted the fact this wasn't an investment car for him, he won't be reaping any dividends. The fact he's been able to enjoy it for over 6 years is enough payoff. Very unfortunately his eye health is causing him to need to sell his classics as he won't be able to drive them.
