Description:

1968 Pontiac Firebird Convertible For Sale

This 1968 Pontiac Firebird convertible comes out of exceptionally long-term ownership, with the current owners having had it for more than twenty years. It is finished in dark blue-green metallic over a black interior with a black power-operated soft top, and it is said to be all numbers matching. Nineteen sixty-eight was the second year of the first-generation F-body Firebird and the year Pontiac retired the 326 in favor of the 350, making this the first season for that engine. Power comes from the 350 cubic inch Pontiac V8 backed by the factory two-speed automatic, the Super Turbine 300, which Pontiac marketed simply as Automatic. The 350 arrived for 1968 as a bored-out evolution of the 326 and carried Pontiac's redesigned cylinder heads for that year, with an open combustion chamber and larger valves. Out back is a 3.08 rear gear, which is the ratio that makes this combination work the way it was meant to: relaxed cruising revs, quiet at speed, and enough torque underneath to move a convertible without effort. Nineteen sixty-eight is also the easiest first-generation Firebird year to identify. The front vent windows were deleted in favor of one-piece door glass and GM's Astro Ventilation system, the front turn signals were reshaped to wrap around the fender corners and serve as front marker lamps, and Pontiac arrowhead marker lights were added to the rear quarters. Underneath, the rear suspension moved to multi-leaf springs with staggered shock absorbers to help control wheel hop. Braking is handled by drums at all four corners, the standard configuration on these cars. Inside is the model's bucket-seat layout in black, and the power top operates as it should, so putting the roof up or down is a matter of holding a switch rather than wrestling with header latches and a manual pull. Convertibles were the smaller half of the story in 1968. Pontiac built 107,112 Firebirds that model year, and only 16,960 of them were ragtops. Combine that with two decades in one household and a factory-correct drivetrain the owners state is original to the car, and this is the version of the first-generation Firebird that collectors tend to chase hardest.
