2019 Ram 1500 Improves IIHS Crash Test Scores

The 2019 Ram 1500 crew cab has improved its scores in crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The redesigned truck earned Good ratings in all six crash categories. Last years model received Good ratings in the moderate front overlap test, side test, and the head restraint and seat test, but Marginal scores in the roof strength test. In fact, the Ram 1500 crew cab and extended cab were the worst performers of any 2018 vehicle in roof strength, IIHS says, where the vast majority of vehicles earn Good ratings. The old truck also ranked Marginal in the driver-side small overlap test, which replicates what happens when the front left corner ofa car hits a tree or pole at 40 mph. The previous model was not rated in the passenger-side small overlap test . Thanks to new technology, the 2019 Ram 1500 earned a Superior rating in front crash prevention. It was able to completely avoid a collision in a low-speed autobrake test from 12 mph, as well as a high-speed autobrake test from 25 mph. IIHS stopped short of naming the new truck a Top Safety Pick because it received a Marginal headlight score. Vehicles need an Acceptable or Good rating in this category to remain eligible for the award. The 2019 Honda Ridgeline is the only pickup truck this cycle to earn the Top Safety Pick designation. The new crash ratings apply to 2019 Ram 1500 crew cab models only. Small overlap ratings, both for the driver and passenger sides, apply to trucks built after July 2018 when Ram improved the cab mounts to the vehicle frame.
