If you havent seen the first 2 episodes of Bitchin Boot Camp , go watch right now on the MotorTrend App!** It may be week 2 for us, but its only day 3 for the contestants at Bitchin Boot Camp ! All the contestants are feeling the pressure and worrying over how quickly their numbers are dwindling. The pressure has some contestants, like Justin Culver, enjoying the pressure while others, like Frank Hjelm, are biting their fingernails with worry. The judges want to ease the tension a bit and announce an art challenge with no elimination at the end, plus a bonus for the winner, to get the day started. Fan Art Challenge (No Elimination): Make Something the Judges Want to Put in Their Office Dave and Kevdogg regularly receive Bitchin Rides themed art pieces from fans of the show. They love the creativity and they appreciate the effort the fans go to in making these art pieces. To help lighten the mood in the shop, they tell the contestants to express their creativity in the form of making a piece of fan art. The only other directive is getting the job done in one hour. The good news: No one will be eliminated at the end of this challenge. The better news: The winner of this challenge will receive a strategic advantage in the following elimination challenge. Some of the contestants are dismayed by the lack of instructions. Briana Huhn says shes at a disadvantage on this one, admitting to the confessional camera that she isnt creative. She decides to demonstrate more of her prodigious fabrication skill for the judges by making a microphone, duplicating her first challenge of making a cylinder out of sheet metal. What she actually turns in looks more like a whisk, but the skill is obvious. Jamie Hjelm struggles with creativity too, making a simple dice and poker chip holder for the judges out a piece of round tube, square tube and flat stocka disappointing performance from someone we expect to do well in the competition. Josh Sartain says he makes a coffee cup holder, but really, its a simple dished piece of sheet metal with a hole cut in the middlenot very creative but a good demonstration of skill. Five of the other contestants make passable pieces of fan art, but the remaining twoMcKinlee Thacker and Frank Hjelmstand out for very opposite reasons. McKinlee decides to make a large cube out of thin-gauge sheet metal and draw dots on every side (making a die), but theres a secret inside. McKinlee filled the cube with water before sealing it up. This is really cool and creative for two reasons, 1) the cube looks like a simple cube until its picked up and the holder can feel and hear the water sloshing around inside, and 2) demonstrates a high level of skill with the welder by completely sealing the cube without burning through the thin sheet metal and allowing the water to leak out. Frank Hjelm, on the other hand, makes the biggest piecearguably no more creative than any other contestantsand is nothing but bad attitude in describing his fellow competitors work. His trophy, while tall and three-dimensional, is made of simple pieces of scrap welded together. The stand doesnt demonstrate any sort of advanced skillother than some cutting and grinding it didnt take much to shapeand his plasma-cut wrench and hammer adornments were made in the exact same way other contestants, like Patrick Laughlin and Frank Fannelli, made their submissionsbut in Frank Hs mind that makes his better. McKinlee was awarded the win, to Frank Hs dismay, and the second challenge is announced. Modify the Front Bumper of a 1968 Camaro: Two-Person Team Challenge with a Double Elimination --> Dave and Kevdogg are not going easy on the boot camp team here. The judges want the contestants to work in pairs and custom-fit a front bumper to a mock-up front-end of a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro. To make the challenge as difficult as possible, they have very specific requirements of the teams1) the bumper must have a quarter-inch gap all the way around the front of the car and teams are NOT allowed to add material to fill the gap (Dave is very specific about this), 2) fill in the squared-off recess where the license plate reveal is located, and 3) shave off the hardware holes on the top of the bumper, smoothing the overall look. To add difficulty, the bumpers must be metal-finished by the end of the challenge (meaning all the existing chrome must be removed and pieces must be polished and ready for re-plating) AND the bumpers the teams are given to work with have all been cut in half. Oh, one more thingeach team is only allowed to test fit their bumper ONCE during the 3.5 hour challenge! The team with the worst bumper will be eliminated. Before teams are broken apart, Dave and Kevdogg give Patrick the advantage he earned for winning the speed bulge challenge from episode one. As his advantage, Patrick will get first pick of his team member. Being all confidence and composure, he announces that he wants to share his advantage with who ever thinks they need it most. Gabby Downing, nervous because of her lack of experience, immediately raises her hand to get the chance to work with Patrick and the first team is set. Briana teams up with Dez Ferrell, Justin teams up with Josh, Frank F. teams up with Jaime, andto both their disappointmentFrank H. and McKinlee are left to work together. But, McKinlee has earned an advantage tooshe and Frank H. will be allowed to test fit their bumper twice during the challenge. Despite being on a team with the best advantage, Frank H. is very obviously not happy to be working with McKinlee. The two just plain doesnt work well together, which is a red flag for the judges as the point of the team challenge is to see how well the contestants work together. Frank is tight lipped about what the next steps should be during the challenge and McKinlee is constantly trying to stroke Franks ego, which only serves to upset Frank further. He tells the confessional camera more than once that he has more experience and knows what they should be doing but refused to speak up during the challenge and take the lead in fabricating their bumper. After their first test fit, Frank insists that they add more material to the inside curves of the bumper (going against Daves directive) and instead of contradicting him, McKinlee goes along with it in the hopes of placating Franks bad attitude. The other teams all work very well together, especially Gabby and Patrick who are laughing and joking throughout the challenge. When its time to review each teams work, Frank H. and McKinlee are already singled out for their very poor teamwork. Justin and Joshs bumper, as well as Frank F. and Jaimes work are deemed passable, but the judges are in store for a huge surprise when they get to Gabby and Patricks piece. All their high-spirited comradery played to their deficit. When Dave and Kevdogg test fit their bumper, they found that it was so far twisted it couldnt be mounted to the Camaro front end. The only reasoning both the judges and Team Gabby/Patrick can come up with for the poor results is a lack of attention to detail. But they arent eliminated just yet. Frank H. is still all bad attitude, blaming McKinlee every chance he can for their inability to work together. Before the judges decide which team will be going home, they announce Briana and Dez as the winners, exemplifying their cohesiveness as a team along with the high level of skill they demonstrated in producing the best looking bumper. The final decision comes down to two factors, teamwork and ability to meet the challenge. Gabby and Patrick were a great team, but they turned in undeniably the worst bumper out of the five teams. Frank H. and McKinlee couldnt get it together as a team and produced the second-worst bumper, but to add to that, they broke the first directiveteams were not allowed to add material to the inside curves of the bumper to achieve the required quarter-inch gap. For those reasons, Frank H. and McKinlee were eliminated. Individual skill alone is not enough to win Bitchin Boot Camp , and Frank Hjelm and McKinlee Thacker proved that. Dave and Kevdogg want to bring in someone who not only has the necessary skills but will also fit in and work well with the existing team at Kindig-it Designs. The competition is heating up contestants, its time to check your egos at the door! Week 2 Bitchin' Boot Camp Power Rankings 8. Gabby Downing: Gabby brings up the rear after this weeks show. Her lack of experience continues to hold her back and her positive attitude and willingness to learn are the only things that kept her safe this week. 7. Justin Culver: Justin almost blends into the walls. Hes a solid performer but has yet to stand out. Were not counting him out yet, though, he could be the dark horse that comes from behind and steals the show. 6. Josh Sartain: Another solid, but not stand-out performance from Josh drops him one spot. Its going to take more than mid-pack performances to come out on top. 5. Frank Fannelli: Frank still comes in at No. 5, but jumps ahead of Josh Sartain, demonstrating more artistic ability in the fan art challenge and turning in consistent mid-pack performances throughout the show. 4. Jaime Hjelm: Jaime is dropping a couple positions as well this week. While she is skilled fabricator and works well in a team, her lack of creativity could be a detriment later in the competition. 3. Patrick Laughlin: While Patrick is obviously one of the most skilled contestants in Bitchin Boot Camp , his poor performance in this episode due to lack of attention to detail (and possibly over-confidence) is dropping him in the ranks. 2. Dez Ferrell: Dez is jumping up the ranks too, her creativity and teamwork skills are proving she is a competitor to be taken seriously. 1. Briana Huhn: Briana has taken a commanding lead, consistently demonstrating her fantastic skills as a fabricator and now, her ability to work well in a team and keep a cool head under pressure.   The post Bitchin Boot Camp, Week 2 Power Rankings: Custom-Fitting a 1968 Camaro Bumper appeared first on Hot Rod Network .
