The March 2021 Issue of HOT ROD Is on Sale Now

The times are uncertain right now, arent they? Well, take comfort in the pages of your favorite car magazine and ride out the storm. The March 2021 issue is on sale now, and its a pretty good one. People have been messaging and emailing me to say they appreciate seeing some old-school hot rods back in HOT ROD magazine, and those folks will certainly appreciate this issues cover car. I mean, look at that Flathead engine and Stromberg combination. That plus a mirror-finish black paintjob, steel wheels, a manual transmission, and classy, understated good looks make this a no-brainer to feature on this issues cover. The story behind the car is good, too. Youll want to read the whole thing. We kept on with the old-school vibe with our next feature, this 1941 Willys built by Roy Brizio Street Rods. This car also exudes a strong presence largely due to its understated shade of steel/gray/pewter paint, a color that custom mixed by the guys at Dan Laughlin Customs. They call the color Cloud Mist Gray; we just call it cool. Under the hood is an LS3 engine plucked from a 2015 Corvette. While many will groan at yet another LS swap (your author included), we cant find too much fault here because the owner wanted a drop-dead reliable runner for long-distance road trips. Hes made at least two trips up to British Columbia for the Deuce Days show and has undoubtedly continued to rack up more miles since then. The Willys interior is stellar and also features a manual transmission, which is always a plus. A Classic Instruments panel monitors the vitals, while the Lokar shifter links to the Tremec TKO600 five-speed. Those leather seats look comfy and inviting enough for long road trips, too. Maybe vintage muscle is your thing? Weve got you covered there with this flawlessly restored and absolutely gorgeous 1970 Camaro Z28. Though everyone seems to love 69 Camaros, Im partial to these early second-gen models, and this one ticks off all the right boxes: rally stripes, factory five-spoke mags with raised white letter tires, and a superb paintjob in Forest Green. Theres an LT-1 350 under the hood, backed up by a four-speed manual transmission, and the interior of the car is as nice looking as the engine compartment. Owner/builder Frank Arone is a stickler for details, and this car has collected several trophies as a result. 1970 was also a good year for Novas, and this one is a standout for combining good looks with hardcore performance and functionality. This is one of those builds that starts off with a simple plan to meet a relatively low budget, but things snowballed once underway. We can all relate. The end result is this corner-carving masterpiece that rides on just about every part in the Detroit Speed catalog. A Katech-built LS3 is underhood, backed by Tremecs T56 Magnum six-speed transmission. Note the remote reservoir coilover shocks to handle bumps in the road, and the A/C system to handle the heat in the cockpit. Detroit Speed complete front end and QUADRALink rear suspension with JRi triple-adjustable shocks underpin this autocrossing X-body, and those Baer 14-inch brake rotors are as big as a pizza pie. Mamma mia! Thats a lot of car features for one issue, but fear not, we didnt skimp on the tech articles, either. For starters, we show you how to bust the rust on an old Super Bee by repairing its nasty taillight panel with new steel from AutoMetal Direct. We also walk you through the process of adding some class and functionality to your classic muscle car interior by means of a new set of billet pedals from Clayton Machine Works. We also chronicle our weeklong build of this 1967 Nova. It was one of our recent Week to Wicked builds done in partnership with CPP. Watch as we disassemble this stock granny-mobile into tire-shredding terror in just five days. Even the coronavirus couldnt stop us! Theres plenty more in this issue, too. Youll want to read tech editor Marlan Davis tome on Oldsmobiles Quad 4 engine upgrades. Plus, read all about how to rebuild LS engine rocker arms, a big disc brake upgrade for a Plymouth Duster, and how to measure for custom pushrods. Its all good stuff you dont want to miss. --> The post The March 2021 Issue of HOT ROD Is on Sale Now appeared first on Hot Rod Network .
